New Japan Street Photography Series

A new photo series inspired by Fujifilm Film Simulations. This time I’m capturing street photography in the Kansai region (around Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe) of Japan using the Kodachrome film simulation, so the theme is “Kansai in Kodachrome”.

When I switched to a Fujifilm camera, I decided on a challenge to upload a photo on social media every day. It was a good challenge, but it got tiring and I felt pressure forcing myself to post every day. As an amateur photographer, every part of photography needs to be fun, so this time I’ll be aiming to post about once a week. I plan to mainly follow my instincts and post regularly when I think of a particular message I want to convey.

Fujifilm X-E4 and Film Simulations

I’ve been using the Fujifilm X-E4 for about one year now. It’s been enough time to become familiar with Fujifilm’s Film Simulations on the camera. I have my favourite simulations and know the best times to use them. However, there is a function for custom presets that allows you to create limitless new film simulations. You can find recipes for these custom simulations online. The best place to start would be Fuji-X Weekly. You take the recipe and input it into your Fujifilm camera, saving it as a custom preset, then you’re ready to go.

Kodak Portra 400 and Kodachrome64 are some of the most popular film simulations from Fuji-X Weekly. It’s hard to know where to start when exploring the film simulations recipes on the site, but I found this post very helpful:
Which Film Simulation Recipes, When?
The author makes it really easy. Since there are 7 presets, he gives you 7 recommendations for your specific Fujifilm camera. The 7 recommended for my camera, the Fujifilm X-E4, are absolutely beautiful. I plan to review all 7 with examples in a future post, but for now, this street photography series features the first two, Kodak Portra 400 v2 and Kodachrome 64.
