If you’re looking for a fun cafe with a cuddly Japanese pudding character, look no further than the PomPomPurin Cafe in Umeda, Osaka. ポムポムプリンカフェ 梅田店 阪急三番街
PomPomPurin is a character created by Sanrio, the creators of Hello Kitty. I thought he was a big pudding who enjoyed eating himself, much like Anpanman. However, he’s actually a Golden Retriever Dog wearing a beret (thanks Wikipedia).
This cafe located in the underground Hankyu Sanbangai shopping area in Umeda, Osaka normally has a very long queue of Japanese girls keen to enjoy the cute character atmosphere and adorable little drinks and sweets. I wanted to visit mostly for gourmet photo opportunities, but I had almost given up because there was always such a long wait. One Saturday I was heading for the nearby Ueshima Coffee when I noticed there was no-one in line. I thought it must have been a mistake and maybe they were closed. In the end I think I was lucky. The staff ushered me in to a seat and the menu of cute desserts and drinks was before me.
Photo Opportunities
There is a large, cute, Plush PomPomPurin who you can actually sit next to for a photo opportunity or some interestingly silent conversation.
Dessert – Pudding, of course
I ordered the standard PomPomPurin dessert, and it came with a chocolate cookie for a lid, no doubt modelled after Pompompurin’s beret. The syrup was separate and you pour it in over the pudding. The consistency of the pudding was closer to yoghurt than jelly. It was sweet and that’s about all I can say because I’m no expert in pudding.
Drinks – Marshmallow Latte
I ordered the Marshmallow Latte to go with my pudding. It had two cute marshmallow characters and a heart mark between them. The white character, a love interest of Pompompurin is apparently another Golden Retriever called Macaron. I found limited information on Macaron, even in Wikipedia. If you know anything more please comment below.

Cartoon murals on the walls
And there were some beautiful cartoon murals on the walls. The entire cafe is very well decorated. Pompompurin’s friends include Muffin the Hamster, Scone the mouse and a little bird who hasn’t made it to the credits yet.
The Centrepiece of the Cafe
This is glorious statue of Pompompurin is in the centre of the room at the Pompompurin Cafe in Umeda, Osaka. It’s a great photo opportunity and the staff are usually happy to take one for you with Pompompurin, a Golden retriever dog with a beret created by Sanrio. Not to be confused as a pudding himself.
